Preparation makes the difference
Fresh paint on a poorly prepared wall will peel, show patches or reveal every repair. So before painting, we sand, fill cracks and holes, and apply primer where needed. Primer is a first coat that helps the paint grip and cover evenly.
If there's mould or damp staining, the cause has to be fixed first. It might be poor ventilation, a leak or a cold bridge, which is a cold spot in the wall where moisture condenses. Painting over it only hides the problem for a while.
The order matters too: ceilings first, then walls, and finally doors and skirting. That way, any drips or marks always land on a surface that's still to be painted.
Interior painting: paint and colour
- Matt: hides small imperfections. Good for ceilings, living rooms and bedrooms.
- Satin or eggshell: stands up better to washing. Ideal for hallways, kitchens and children's rooms.
- Paints for damp areas, with anti-mould protection, for bathrooms and kitchens.
- Enamel (gloss or satinwood) for doors, skirting and woodwork, for a harder-wearing finish.
Light colours make a room feel larger and reflect the light. Before you decide, try the colour on a patch of wall and look at it in the morning and in the evening: the light changes the result a great deal.
Exterior painting and façades
Outside, paint has to cope with sun, rain and changes in temperature. We use paints made for exterior use and repair cracks and loose areas before painting. Exterior work depends on the weather: in rain or high humidity, paint doesn't dry properly.
In blocks of flats, painting the façade is decided by the condominium. If scaffolding has to go up on the street, check with the câmara municipal (local council) whether a permit to occupy the public space is needed.
The price of a painting job depends on the area, the condition of the surfaces, the working height, the number of colours and the type of paint. An empty home is quicker to paint than a furnished one.
Frequently asked questions
How many coats of paint are needed?
Usually two coats on a well-prepared wall. Going from a dark colour to a light one may need an extra coat. What matters is an even colour, with no patches or roller marks.
Can I stay at home while the painting is done?
Yes. We paint room by room and protect furniture, floors and window frames. Water-based paints have little smell these days, but it's still best to keep the place well aired.
When is the best time of year to paint a façade?
In dry weather with mild temperatures. Spring and early autumn are usually good times. Rain, strong wind or intense heat all spoil the finish.
Will painting get rid of damp patches?
No. Paint only covers the stain, and it will come back. First the cause has to be found and fixed; then the wall is cleaned and painted with a suitable paint.
Do I need to move my furniture out before painting?
No. Just move the furniture away from the walls and take down pictures and fragile items. We cover and protect the rest, and clean up at the end.
